At Sybourn, we aim to encourage children to build a passion for exploring, evaluating and questioning in science through hands-on experiments. We endeavour to develop every child’s awe and wonder of the subject through scientific enquiry.

In Science, we aim to teach an understanding of natural phenomena. We aim to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. Science teaches methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought. We aim to teach each child to learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way in which Science will affect the future on a personal, national, and global level.

The objectives of teaching Science are to enable children to:

• ask and answer scientific questions
• explore the environment around them
• plan and carry out scientific investigations, using equipment
• evaluate evidence, and present their conclusions clearly and accurately.

Children are taught a new Science unit each half term. Please see the
Curriculum Map for a breakdown of the units taught in each year group.
