Reading at Home for KS2 Children

 

As children grow older, the importance of reading at home is just as important as it is when they were beginning readers. Sharing a book with your child, reading aloud to them and discussing different types of books helps to develop a love of reading and develop life-long skills.

Book Banding

At Sybourn Primary School home reading books continue to be banded across Key Stage 2  to ensure children are sufficiently challenged with their reading and are reading appropriate books for their age. The bands take into account a range of factors including Lexile scores and age-appropriate reading lists from experts such as Destination Reader, Book Trust and National Literacy Trust. Children read regularly with adults in school who monitor their reading levels carefully, adjusting them as and when required. When a child is secure in their current band, they progress onto the next colour band opening up a new world of exciting and interesting books! As you move up KS2, it should be noted that the progression through colour bands is not as rapid as it is in KS1 due to the complex skills required to analyse the text correctly and the level of challenge that these books provide.

 Home Reading Records

We suggest that your child reads a book for at least 20 minutes daily. This should be a range of independent reading and reading with an adult. To support your child with this, they have a Home Reading Record which must be completed on a regular basis. Your child should write the title of the book they are reading and write a few comments related to a reading skill e.g. clarifying a tricky work or making an inference about a character. This should be signed by an adult regularly.
